Privacy notice
Applies to the WordSquirrel app for Windows and Android, and to this website. Effective 7 November 2026.
WordSquirrel is built so that your words stay yours. This notice lists, item by item, what the app stores, what it sends and to whom, and how you delete it. The same items are shown inside the app under Settings → Privacy notice.
Translation data
Text you capture or type is sent only to the Google Cloud Translation API, and only when a translation is requested.
Local storage
Your dictionary and settings are stored on this device. When you sign in, your dictionary is also stored on the WordSquirrel server in Belgium (Google Cloud, europe-west1), under your Google account ID, so that it can be synced between your devices. Your settings stay on this device.
Account
Signing in is optional and uses your Google account. While you are signed in, this device stores your email address; on desktop it also stores an encrypted sign-in token. Your Google account ID stays on this device until you delete your cloud data, so that syncing can continue where it left off after you sign in again. The server stores your account ID and email address with your synced dictionary. Sync requests identify you with a Google sign-in token.
Deleting your data
You can delete your cloud data on the Account & sync screen. Your other devices stop syncing and ask you to sign in again, and the dictionary on your devices is kept. For 7 days you can restore the cloud data by signing in again; after that the server deletes it permanently. The server then keeps only a deletion marker with your account ID and no other data, so that your other devices learn about the deletion. You can also remove WordSquirrel from the connected apps of your Google account at any time.
Without the app, or if you prefer, request deletion on the web.
API key
Your API key is stored encrypted with your operating system’s built-in key protection — never in plain text.
Icons
Some icons are Font Awesome Free (fontawesome.com, CC BY 4.0) and Material Symbols (Google, Apache 2.0).
Usage statistics
WordSquirrel sends a daily anonymous report: a random installation ID, the app version, your operating system and usage counters. The text you translate is never sent. You can turn this off in Settings at any time.
Update checks
Once a day WordSquirrel asks GitHub for the latest release information. The request carries no account or installation identifier.
Service policy
Once a day WordSquirrel downloads a small policy file from the WordSquirrel server: the minimum supported version and the online-translation rules. The request carries no identifier.
Google account data
When you sign in with Google, WordSquirrel receives your Google account ID and email address. It uses them only to identify your synced dictionary on the WordSquirrel server and to show you which account is signed in. It does not read any other Google data, does not share these details with anyone, and deletes them when you delete your cloud data.
